How Many Megapixels Does It Take To Make A Good Camera Phone?
With some of the latest camera mobile phones featuring 14 megapixel lenses, it can make you feel like you’ve been left behind by the pace of innovation. But for the average user, are such advances in camera mobile phones worth the extra cost? Would most of us be able to see any difference at all?
Megapixels are used as a measure of a cameras resolution and therefore picture quality and indicate the number of image sensors built into the lens. So a one megapixel camera has one million pixels and a two megapixel model will have two million pixel sensors in it's lens.
Are These The Same As The Pixels On A Monitor Or Television?
Technically, no. In a screen, a pixel consists of a single "dot" that can be one of several colors. On a camera lens, each pixel/image sensor only records one colour, either red, green or blue. So it takes three camera "pixels" to produce the same information for one TV screen "pixel".
Can Digital Camera's Produce HD Quality Pictures?
Comparisons can prove technical as the technologies and applications are different, but a digital camera would need a resolution of about 2.4 megapixels to produce an image big enough to fill a standard HD display. However, bear in mind that a camera image wouldn't fit the full width of a HD screen as digital cameras usually take pictures with a 4:3 screen ratio instead of the 16:9 widescreen used by HD Televisions.
Also the resolution of an HDTV only counts the number of pixels, not how big each pixel is. This means that the same image might look very sharp on a computer monitor, but more blurry on a large TV, even if both had the same resolution.
So With Phone Camera Megapixels It's Simply A Case Of Bigger Is Better?
Whilst bigger might seem better, it's not so black and white in practice. In two otherwise identical models, the camera with more megapixels will produce the clearer shot. However, there are many other factors that affect picture quality. The main factor is lens quality which tends to be lower in phone cameras due to size restrictions. A second critical factor is the camera flash which is often a Xenon version on newer phones. These give off a brighter flash than older LED versions and therefore better pictures.
What Other Features Can Improve Quality?
Optical focus will zoom in by physically adjusting parts of the lens. This gives much better results than digital zoom, which simply takes the selected part of the image in view and blows it up.
While many camera phones have a fixed focus, those with autofocus will usually produce shots that show the most important parts more sharply. Some newer models can even recognise faces and automatically focus on them.
How Many Megapixels Is Best?
If you're simply an occasional phone photographer the usual 2 megapixels on most phones should be adequate for many users. If you take your phone snapping more seriously and demand high quality results as good as an average dedicated camera, then you'll need at least 5 megapixels. Going any higher with the current level of technology often means you would be better off buying a dedicated digital camera and using your phone as a backup.
