Brand New Nikon D5100 DSLR Camera First Glance
It appears like the general public are needing to buy digital SLR cameras these days thanks to the fact that the image quality of the DSLR is so much better. It used to be at least $1000 for a low end DSLR, but now you can get a high quality camera from Canon, Sony or Nikon as an example for a bit less than $1000 easily. The Nikon D5100 is directed at the lower-mid end of the spectrum, and looks like it will be very popular.
The D5100 comes with many fantastic features built into it, it's difficult to believe it's under $900 complete with an 18-55mm lens. Some of the features include a 16.2MP CMOS sensor, a large three inch rotating viewscreen, in-camera HDR and HD video with continual auto-focusing!
The D5100 works with all available Nikkor lenses, but can autofocus only with AF-S and AF-I lenses as it does not contain an autofocus motor within the body. This shouldn't ever pose a challenge, just make sure that you buy this kind of lens when upgrading.
The HD movie capability includes constant auto-focus, which is really incredible when you think about it. This is a DSLR camera, and it can be used as a mpeg recorder as well... Extraordinarily cool. Yes quite a few DSLRs can shoot video, and even HD; but can those DSLRs autofocus when shooting video or do you have to do it by hand? Make sure you check before buying!
HDR is awesome, but I've been having a tough time making it work with my point and shoot camera. In-camera HDR does all of the work for you! Two bracketed exposures are returned to back, and then the camera combines them into a single HDR image that shows boosted details from shadow and highlights. These shots usually look superb and actually give a 'WOW!' factor to your stills.
Many people are resolution crazy.... Simply because one camera has a higher megapixel ( MP ) count does not always mean it's better. Please remember this when looking for a new DSLR.
Image resolution means the maximum size possible; for this camera it's 16.2 MP ( million pixels, or thousands of pixels ) or 4928 x 3264. That's a ENORMOUS image! If you post an image online, generally it's only about four hundred x three hundred ; and the scale of your entire desktop on your PC is probably about 1024 x 768. So what this implies is that the photographs taken by this camera at max resolution are about 4 times bigger than you can see at 100% on your computer screen!
Please note that a bigger image doesn't automatically mean a better image. If you have got a crap camera with a crummy lens but it takes big pictures it doesn't mean they're good.
Image-quality on the Nikon D5100 thankfully is fantastic. Nikon works at keeping client level camera quality high so that they can battle with Canon and Sony in the ever growing marketplace. No-one wants to put out a poor quality $900 camera, that's for sure.
Is the Nikon D5100 worth buying? Yes, it is! The camera has a great list of attribute, quality lenses, and is simple to just pick up and use. Nowadays I find myself recommending Nikon DSLRs over Canon and Sony, and I see no reason to not give the D5100 a huge thumbs up as well .
